Questions & Answers
What can I store in my safe deposit box?
Although there are no specific guidelines as to what can be stored in your box we do ask that you consider the safety of our employees as well as your own. You should not store any explosives, intoxicants, narcotics, weapons or any property of illegal nature.
Are the contents of my box insured through the bank?
The contents of your box are not insured unless you insure them yourself. Contact your insurance agent to inquire about your options. There is no FDIC insurance on the contents of a safe deposit box.
How do I pay for my safe deposit box?
Rent for your safe deposit box is billed on an annual basis. For your convenience, we can debit your checking or savings account. This will assure that your box does not become past due and prevents any late fees.
What happens if I do not pay my rent?
You will be notified by mail that your box has become past due. You are given adequate time to make your payment. Should your box become past due, a late fee will be assessed. Should your box become severely past due, the bank will drill open the box at your expense. The contents will be retained until payment has been made.
Will you accept Power of Attorney or a handwritten note authorizing access to my box?
No. You may grant access to your box through an agent designation form that is specific to Bank of Sun Prairie and your safe deposit box number. With Power of Attorney papers, we cannot verify whether these documents have been revoked.
What happens if I lose my safe deposit keys?
If one key is lost, bring in the remaining key and we will close your box and transfer the contents to a new box or re-key your box. (may vary from office to office) There will be a small fee charged to replace the missing key. If both keys are lost, we will need to drill open the box in your presence. You will be responsible for drilling costs.
Who can enter my box in the event of death?
If your box is jointly leased with one or more persons, the surviving lessees will have all rights to enter your box. If you are the only lessee remaining on the box, access is restricted to a Will search until a personal representative has been named.
Who has access to my box?
Only those listed on the contract or agents appointed by those lessees have access to your box. The bank does not have access to the contents at any time.
Is your vault fire-proof, waterproof or burglar-proof?
Vaults are resistant to fire, floods and burglary. Although we can’t guarantee 100% vault security, we do take all precautions to assure the safety and security of our vault and your contents through our practices and procedures.
Why should I keep a record of the contents in my safe deposit box?
It is good practice to keep a listing of what is in your box. Not only does it make it easier for you to find but it is also a good record should you ever need to verify what is in your box.
